This is<br \/>\nwell demonstrated by longer life expectancies. The<br \/>\naverage life expectancy has risen from 46.6 years<br \/>\nworldwide in the 1950s to 71.4 years in 2015[[NU figures.]]\nand could even reach 90 years for women in some<br \/>\ncountries by 2030[[Research by the Imperial College of London published in The Lancet medical review.]]. This longevity is partly due to the<br \/>\ngeneral improvement in living conditions. However, it<br \/>\nis mainly the result of the progress made in medical<br \/>\nresearch in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><quote>As in other sectors, this progress is driven by the<br \/>\nbreakthroughs made elsewhere in the high tech<br \/>\nindustry. The interaction of these two universes has<br \/>\nresulted in major advances in the treatment of some<br \/>\nconditions.<\/quote><br \/>\n Biotech, immunotherapy and medtech are<br \/>\nall new disciplines that are taking the place of<br \/>\nconventional medicine and research and are evidence<br \/>\nof the recent disruption to healthcare and the life<br \/>\nsciences. <em>\u201cThis development is dictated by cost and<br \/>\ndemand considerations\u201d<\/em>, summarises Estelle M\u00e9nard,<br \/>\nAssistant Head of Thematic Management at CPR AM.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cHealthcare spending is on an unsustainable path due to demographic trends and the ageing of the population\u201d<\/em>.<br \/>\nIt accounts for 10% to 12% of the GDP of OECD<br \/>\ncountries on average. In the US, this figure reached<br \/>\n17.8% in 2015, in other words $3,200 billion. The cost<br \/>\nof drugs alone amounts to $315 billion on this market,<br \/>\nrepresenting 9.8% of total healthcare spending. <em>\u201cWe<br \/>\nare gradually changing mentality, explains MarieH\u00e9l\u00e8ne<br \/>\nLeopold, a healthcare and pharmaceuticals<br \/>\nanalyst at Amundi. The idea is no longer to prescribe<br \/>\nmore drugs; on the contrary, the focus is on avoiding<br \/>\nrepeated treatments by improving the quality of<br \/>\nhealthcare and the effectiveness of drugs\u201d<\/em>. The<br \/>\nprogress made in recent years has been aimed, along<br \/>\nthese lines, at developing a more personalised, and<br \/>\ntherefore less expensive, healthcare system. The<br \/>\ncurrent disruptive forces are also redirecting<br \/>\ntraditionally \u201creparative\u201d medicine towards a more<br \/>\npreventive approach.<\/p>\n<p>These development focuses are attributable to several<br \/>\nfactors. First there is the exponential increase in usable<br \/>\ndata, also known as big data.<br \/>\n<quote>More information is<br \/>\nbeing gathered thanks to the emergence of large-scale<br \/>\nplayers, following the consolidation of the healthcare<br \/>\nsector, and the expanding of social security cover.<\/quote><\/p>\n<p>Incumbent laboratories have also stepped up their<br \/>\ncollaboration with more innovative biotech companies,<br \/>\nwhose development is focused more on the processing<br \/>\nof these data. The quantitative and qualitative<br \/>\nimprovement in the information gathered has finally<br \/>\nresulted in more sophisticated analysis. These<br \/>\nsignificant advances in research have allowed<br \/>\nlaboratories to concentrate on disease prevention.<br \/>\nData can also be analysed more quickly. Thanks to the development of artificial intelligence and algorithms,<br \/>\nand to connected objects\u2019 ever more finely tuned<br \/>\nsensors, diagnoses, and therefore the prescriptions<br \/>\ngiven as a result, have considerably improved. A year<br \/>\nago, for instance, BioFire (Biom\u00e9rieux) made a<br \/>\nremarkable achievement by launching a test that is<br \/>\nable to detect whether a case of meningitis is viral or<br \/>\nbacterial in less than an hour. <\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGenerally speaking, the digitisation of the sector now<br \/>\nallows the monitoring of individuals\u2019 health in real time<br \/>\nand the prevention of chronic conditions such as high<br \/>\nblood pressure, summarises Wesley Lebeau, the<br \/>\nmanager of the CPR Invest \u2013 Global Disruptive<br \/>\nOpportunities fund. The goal is to achieve better<br \/>\nforesight and to management treatments accordingly\u201d<\/em>.<br \/>\nThe range of possibilities, encompassing algorithms,<br \/>\nconnected objects and data processing, is such that IT<br \/>\ngiants such as Google and Apple now have a large<br \/>\npresence in the healthcare field and have recently<br \/>\nsigned agreements with big laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>The quality of the care given is also a feature of the<br \/>\ncurrent shake-up. Whereas in the past the use of a<br \/>\nbroad-spectrum antibiotic was a prerequisite before<br \/>\nadministering the right molecule, the process has now<br \/>\nbeen simplified. The advances made in research by<br \/>\nbiotech companies, especially when it comes to<br \/>\ntargeted therapies, are in this way significant. For<br \/>\nexample, <em>\u201cHerceptin can now be used to treat a specific<br \/>\ntype of breast cancer that had one of the highest<br \/>\nmortality rates just ten years ago\u201d<\/em>, says Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne<br \/>\nLeopold. Other fields than immuno-oncology have also<br \/>\nbeen truly revolutionised in the last few years, such as<br \/>\ngenomics and microbiota. The potential benefits are<br \/>\nhuge and are whetting the appetites of the big<br \/>\nlaboratories. This is the case for Roche, which<br \/>\nconsiderably expanded its portfolio of products, and<br \/>\npatents, by taking over the company Genentech in<br \/>\n2009.<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cdisrupted\u201d healthcare is simpler, faster and more<br \/>\neffective, it above all meets cost control needs. <em>\u201cThe<br \/>\nsolutions offered by biotech companies are still<br \/>\nexpensive, acknowledges Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Leopold. But<br \/>\nnew technologies, such as the 3D-printing of tissues, are being introduced to reduce their cost\u201d<\/em>. Pressure on<br \/>\nlaboratories\u2019 R&#038;D budgets and the explosion of<br \/>\navailable data are at the same time improving research<br \/>\nproductivity. Some estimates put the savings at around<br \/>\n5% of expenditure on the US market, in other words<br \/>\n$20 billion.<br \/>\n<quote>More generally, digitisation could reduce<br \/>\nboth the total cost of approved drugs, which currently<br \/>\nstands at $2.6 billion, and also increase the number of<br \/>\nthese drugs.<\/quote><br \/>\n <em>\u201cWhereas on average, over the last ten<br \/>\nyears, 28 drugs were given the go ahead by the FDA<br \/>\neach year, this figure could rise to 33, or even higher,<br \/>\nthanks to digitisation\u201d<\/em>, says Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Leopold. The<br \/>\npossibilities offered by disruption are all the greater as<br \/>\nthe healthcare sector is vast.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur approach is based on five sub-fields\u201d<\/em>, explains<br \/>\nWesley Lebeau. <em>\u201cBiotech, medtech, immunotherapy, ehealthcare,<br \/>\nlife sciences and diagnostics\u201d<\/em>.
